  1. The textiles of India are as diverse as its culture.Nearly four million handlooms are engaged in weaving fabrics of nearly 23 different varities. The Handloom census of India ,undertaken in 1987-88 , places the number of handloom textile workers at 65.3 lakh persons.Handlooms contriibute nearly 23% of the total cloth produced in the country.
  2. A Handloom consisted of four wooden uprights joined at top and bottom to form a box-like framework.there were wooden rollers between both pair of uprights,one for the weft and one to collect the cloth.
  3. The weaving operation consisted of sending the shuttle containing the weft back and forth through the threads of the warp.Before weaving could begin the warp had to be wound on its roller or beam & the threads passed through the lathe and fastened to the cloth beam.
